General Information For Survivors And Caregivers
The American Cancer Society has chosen to adopt the broadest definition possible
for a cancer survivor - that being all those who choose to define themselves as
survivors, from the time of their diagnosis through the balance of life.
We recognize the significant role and interest that loved ones, friends, and
health care professionals play in the lives of cancer survivors. We acknowledge
that they, too, feel the effects of the cancer experience in many similar ways and
may also think of themselves as survivors. It is our desire to be as inclusive
as possible to all those touched by cancer, and we welcome their voices and
perspectives within survivorship.
As our honored guests at Relay, survivors and caregivers:
- Can attend a special reception in your honor on the Friday night of our Relay! A delicious meal will be served
and entertainment will be provided. You will have the opportunity to meet
and greet fellow survivors, share your stories, and receive special honor and recognition.
- Help make this year's handprint banner.
Simply put on a non-Latex glove (which we provide), dip your hand in purple
paint, and press down on the banner. The result, as you can see from
the pictures below, is something that is beautiful, meaningful, and truly
inspirational to us all.
- Walk the first lap to officially kick off our Relay For Life! After the short opening ceremony, everyone not walking this lap lines the inside of the track to
cheer you on.
Whether you're on a team participating
in the Relay For Life or not, we hope you're
able to stay long enough to catch our
luminaria ceremony,
held shortly after the
sun goes down Friday night. It is one of the most emotional and powerful events at Relay.
We believe it's important for as many survivors and caregivers to experience the
Relay For Life as possible, whether they're on a team or not. If anyone you know might be interested in attending the reception and seeing what Relay is all about,
please invite them to join you,
and give them this website address for more
information.
We look forward to seeing you there!
