Team Member Checklist
People always think of committee members and team captains as having the important
responsibilities. After all, a team captain leads a team of 8 to 15 people to participate in the
Relay For Life, raise funds to fight cancer, and increase everyone's awareness of cancer. No small
task! But a team captain, and a Relay, are only as good as their team members. Each and every
person is critical to a successful Relay. To this end, here is a checklist each team member can
follow to help them be as successful as they can.
-
Make sure you understand what is expected of you from your team captain. There is a
registration fee of $10 per person, and a minimum amount ($100) that you will be asked to
try and raise to support the Relay.
-
Receive a collection envelope and other related Relay For Life documents and fundraising
information from your team captain.
-
Learn about the Relay For Life. People will be much more willing to make a donation if you
believe in what you're asking them to help with.
-
Relays are a lot more fun when we have a lot more people, so get out there and encourage
everyone you know to join your team of 8-15 people, or start their own! If you recruit a new
team and they meet certain criteria,
you will qualify for a $25 voucher to the Relay Store!
-
After your team captain has set up your team's page on the online giving system, please follow
these instructions to sign up, set up your account, and start raising money
on-line!
-
If you don't sign up on the on-line fundraising site, please fill out and send in a registration
form with your registration fee of $10 per person.
-
Try to meet and exceed your fundraising goal. Look for many great fundraising ideas on this
website, and please share your ideas with us so that we can
share them with everyone else!
-
Try to raise at least $250 to qualify for an incentive prize!
-
Provide luminaria to those who want to
honor cancer survivors and those they have lost to cancer. Please remember to turn in your
luminaria forms and their accompanying donations to your team captain as they are sold.
-
Invite cancer survivors and caregivers to the
event. They are our honored guests.
-
Think about all of the people you know. There are so many people who have been affected by
cancer or want to make a difference. All you have to do is ask! Would your company make a
monetary or in-kind (goods) donation? Does your company
match your donation? (If they're not on the list, please ask anyway. Many
companies will match gifts but haven't registered with the American Cancer Society.) Do you
know someone with a local business that might be interested in having a team or making a
donation? Don't forget to tell your team captain or a planning committee member about these
contacts. It makes a huge difference!
-
Attend all meetings held by your team captain.
-
Participate in and help organize team fundraising events, and be sure to
let us know what's going on so we can
help you promote them.
-
Think of ways you can decorate your team campsite at Relay to be the best!
-
Try to help your team qualify for the Relay For Life
Fundraising Club.
-
Visit this website regularly! There is a wealth of information here, and we update this
site frequently, especially as we draw closer to Relay.
-
Make sure your team is prepared to bring all of the
essentials to Relay.
-
Every Relay participant is expected to follow
these guidelines.
-
Turn in any additional donations collected to your team captain as soon as you can.
-
Help set up your team campsite and decorations for your theme.
-
Walk during all of your appointed times. (Your team captain will provide you with a
walking schedule.)
-
Participate in all of the fundraisers and activities that take place during Relay. (Check
our Relay event schedule as we draw closer
to the event to see what's happening.
-
Enjoy all of the entertainment provided during Relay!
-
We are always on the lookout for volunteers during Relay, so if you have any spare time
and would like to help out, please track down any committee member and ask what you can do.
-
Provide your team captain with lots of good, constructive feedback!
-
Check in on how your team did.
-
If you raised at least $250, make sure your team captain has given you an incentive
prize voucher.
-
Attend any wrap-up events you are invited to.
-
Consider starting your own team next year!
Youth teams are made up of participants under the age of 18. Our youth team members have
some special responsibilities above and beyond those of other team members:
-
First, please explain Relay to your parents or guardians. Tell them when and where it is,
how it works, and encourages them to join us or ask us any questions they may have.
-
Help find chaperones for your team! The American Cancer Society requires all youth teams to
have a minimum of one chaperone over the age of 25 for every 5 youth participants. Each
chaperone must also sign and return a chaperone agreement
form as soon as possible. Don't wait until the last minute to find chaperones!
-
Have both you and a parent or legal guardian sign and date your youth participation
form and return them to your team captain promptly. Please remember that you
must turn in one of these forms before being admitted to the event.
-
Have both you and a parent or legal guardian sign and date your money collection envelope when you
are done with it and return it to your team captain.
